F32121Encoder 2: Coarse position error

What it means

F32121 tells you that the drive detected an error in the actual value sensing of Encoder 2 and can no longer trust the position this encoder delivers. The two manuals name the consequence differently: on G130 and G150 the code is titled Encoder 2: Coarse position error — an error was detected on the module, so the coarse position supplied by the actual value sensing must be assumed to be incorrect; on S120 and S150 it is titled Encoder 2: Determined commutation position incorrect — the error lies in the sensing of the commutation position actual value. Depending on how the drive is configured, the same condition can also be signalled as an alarm (A) or with no reaction (N).

Why it appears

  • Encoder 2 on G130 and G150: for the actual value sensing, an error was detected on the module. As a result, it must be assumed that the actual value sensing supplies an incorrect coarse position.
  • Encoder 2 on S120 and S150: a commutation position actual value sensing error was detected.

What to check

  1. Replace the motor with DRIVE-CLiQ or the appropriate Sensor Module — the manual gives this as the remedy for both variants of the fault.

Acknowledging and restarting

In the fault variant the drive stops the motor and inhibits its pulses; the fault can be acknowledged once pulse inhibit is present. After acknowledgement the drive can be restarted. Where the same condition is configured as an alarm (A) or as a no-reaction signal (N), the manual specifies no reaction and no acknowledgement — the signal remains until the encoder error itself is remedied.

The same on every family

Every manual that describes F32121 gives it the same reaction, acknowledgement and message class.

Questions technicians ask

What does fault F32121 mean on a SINAMICS drive?

It means an error was detected in the actual value sensing of Encoder 2: on G130/G150 the coarse position must be assumed incorrect, on S120/S150 the determined commutation position is incorrect. The drive therefore no longer trusts the position from Encoder 2.

How do I clear fault F32121?

The manual's remedy is to replace the motor with DRIVE-CLiQ or the appropriate Sensor Module. Then acknowledge the fault once pulse inhibit is present and restart the drive.

Why does F32121 sometimes appear as an alarm or with no reaction?

The drive configuration decides: the same condition can also be signalled as an alarm or with no reaction. For these variants the manual specifies no reaction and no acknowledgement.

Is F32121 the same on G130/G150 and on S120/S150?

It affects Encoder 2 in both cases, but the manuals title it differently: Encoder 2: Coarse position error on G130/G150 versus Encoder 2: Determined commutation position incorrect on S120/S150. In both cases the remedy is to replace the motor with DRIVE-CLiQ or the appropriate Sensor Module.
