F31405Encoder 1: Temperature in the encoder evaluation exceeded

What it means

F31405 is raised when the drive detects an inadmissibly high temperature in the electronics of Encoder 1 — the encoder evaluation of a motor connected via DRIVE-CLiQ (Sensor Module Encoder 1). The temperature is measured in 0.1 °C steps; for the G130/G150 entries the manual gives the fault threshold as 125 °C. Depending on how the drive is configured, the same condition can also be issued only as an alarm (A) or without any reaction (N).

Why it appears

  • An inadmissibly high temperature was detected in the encoder electronics or in the encoder evaluation of Encoder 1.
  • On G130/G150 the encoder evaluation of a motor with DRIVE-CLiQ reports the fault once the measured board/module temperature reaches the threshold of 125 °C; in all families the affected component is the Sensor Module Encoder 1.

What to check

  1. Reduce the ambient temperature around the DRIVE-CLiQ connection of the motor.

Reading the message value

  • On S120/S150 the fault value in r0949 is interpreted hexadecimal as yyxxxx: yy is the temperature sensor number, xxxx is the measured module temperature in 0.1 °C.
  • On G130/G150 the fault value in r0949 is interpreted decimal and contains the measured board/module temperature in 0.1 °C.
  • The message text carries two placeholders: %1 is the temperature in 0.1 °C and %2 is the temperature sensor number.

Parameters the manual names

  • r0949 — read the fault value here: it holds the measured encoder-evaluation temperature in 0.1 °C and, where the hexadecimal interpretation applies, the temperature sensor number in the upper byte.

Acknowledging and restarting

The fault is acknowledged immediately; switching the power off and on also clears it. When the drive is configured to issue this condition only as an alarm (A) or with no reaction (N), no automatic reaction takes place and no acknowledgement is required.

Questions technicians ask

What does fault F31405 in SINAMICS mean?

The temperature measured in the evaluation electronics of Encoder 1 has exceeded the permissible value. For G130/G150 the manual gives the fault threshold as 125 °C, measured in 0.1 °C steps.

How do I clear fault F31405?

Reduce the ambient temperature for the DRIVE-CLiQ connection of the motor. The fault is then acknowledged immediately; switching the power off and on also clears it.

Where can I read the measured temperature of F31405?

In r0949. On S120/S150 it is read hexadecimal as yyxxxx, where yy is the temperature sensor number and xxxx the temperature in 0.1 °C; on G130/G150 it is read as the decimal temperature in 0.1 °C.

Can F31405 also appear as an alarm?

Yes. Depending on the drive configuration, the same condition can also be issued as an alarm (A) or with no reaction (N); in that case no acknowledgement is required.
