F31163Encoder 1: Analog sensor position value exceeds limit value

What it means

F31163 means that the position value delivered by the analog sensor of encoder 1 has exceeded the permissible range of -0.5 ... +0.5. The monitoring is assigned to Encoder 1. Depending on how the drive is configured, the same condition can also be signaled only as an alarm or as a message without any automatic reaction.

Why it appears

  • The position value of encoder 1's analog sensor has left the permissible range of -0.5 ... +0.5.

What to check

  1. Read the fault value in r0949, interpreting it as a decimal number, to see which position value ran out of range.
  2. If the fault value is 1: check the LVDT ratio in p4678, then check the reference signal connection at track B.
  3. If the fault value is 2: check the coefficients of the characteristic in p4663 ... p4666.

Reading the message value

  • The drive stores the fault value in r0949; interpret the value as a decimal number.
  • 1 — the out-of-range position value came from the LVDT sensor.
  • 2 — the out-of-range position value came from the encoder characteristic.

Parameters the manual names

  • r0949 — holds the fault value: read it as a decimal number to determine whether the LVDT sensor (1) or the encoder characteristic (2) produced the invalid position value.
  • p4678 — the LVDT ratio: check this setting when the fault value is 1.
  • p4663 ... p4666 — the coefficients of the encoder characteristic (K0 ... K3): check these settings when the fault value is 2.

Acknowledging and restarting

This fault is accepted only while the drive is in the pulse-inhibit state: bring the drive into a condition in which it no longer outputs pulses, acknowledge the fault, and then restart it. When the drive is configured so that this condition appears only as an alarm or as a message without any automatic reaction, that variant requires no acknowledgment either.

Questions technicians ask

What does fault F31163 mean in SINAMICS?

The position value of encoder 1's analog sensor has exceeded the permissible range of -0.5 ... +0.5, so the actual position value can no longer be considered valid.

How do I clear fault F31163?

Read the fault value in r0949: if it is 1, check the LVDT ratio (p4678) and the reference signal connection at track B; if it is 2, check the coefficients of the characteristic (p4663 ... p4666). Then acknowledge the fault and restart.

What does the fault value of F31163 tell me?

Interpreted as a decimal number, 1 means the invalid position value came from the LVDT sensor, and 2 means it came from the encoder characteristic.

Can F31163 also appear as an alarm?

Yes. Depending on the drive's configuration, the same condition can also be signaled as an alarm or as a message without any automatic reaction; in that no-reaction variant no acknowledgment is required either.
