F31161Encoder 1: Analog sensor channel B failed

What it means

F31161 is raised when the voltage that the analog sensor delivers to Encoder 1 on channel B leaves the limits within which the drive can evaluate it. The G130/G150 and S120/S150 manuals describe this condition in the same words, so one and the same procedure applies no matter which of these converters the code appears on. Depending on the drive's configuration, the same condition can also be signalled as an alarm (A) or with no reaction (N) instead of as a fault. The drive writes the fault value into r0949; interpret it as a decimal number to see which of the three limits was exceeded.

Why it appears

  • The input voltage of the analog sensor connected to Encoder 1, channel B, is outside the permissible limits.

What to check

  1. Read the fault value in r0949, interpreting it as a decimal number, to identify which limit was violated.
  2. Fault value 1: check the output voltage of the analog sensor.
  3. Fault value 2: check the voltage setting for each encoder period (p4675).
  4. Fault value 3: check the range limit setting and increase it if necessary (p4676).

Reading the message value

  • The drive stores the fault value in r0949; interpret it as a decimal number.
  • 1 — the input voltage lies outside the detectable measuring range.
  • 2 — the input voltage lies outside the selected measuring range (p4675).
  • 3 — the absolute value of the input voltage has exceeded the range limit (p4676).

Parameters the manual names

  • r0949 — read the fault value here, as a decimal number, to see which of the three voltage conditions on channel B triggered F31161.
  • p4675 — analog sensor channel B voltage per encoder period: check this voltage setting when the fault value is 2.
  • p4676 — analog sensor range limit threshold: check this limit and increase it if necessary when the fault value is 3.

Acknowledging and restarting

Correct the cause first; the drive accepts acknowledgement of the fault with pulse inhibit, after which it can be restarted. If the drive is configured to output this condition as an alarm (A) or with no reaction (N), the manual specifies no reaction and no acknowledgement for those variants.

What differs between the drive families

Straight from the manuals' own fields — F31161 is not described identically everywhere.

Questions technicians ask

What does fault F31161 mean on a SINAMICS G130, G150, S120 or S150?

Encoder 1's analog sensor is delivering an input voltage on channel B that lies outside the permissible limits. The fault value in r0949 (read as a decimal) tells which specific limit was exceeded.

How do I fix F31161?

Work through the fault value: for 1 check the output voltage of the analog sensor, for 2 check the voltage setting per encoder period in p4675, for 3 check the range limit in p4676 and increase it if necessary. Then acknowledge the fault and restart the drive.

Where is the fault value for F31161 stored?

In r0949, interpreted as a decimal number: 1 means outside the detectable measuring range, 2 outside the selected measuring range (p4675), and 3 that the absolute value exceeded the range limit (p4676).

Can F31161 appear as an alarm instead of a fault?

Yes. Depending on the drive's configuration, the same condition can also be signalled as an alarm (A) or with no reaction (N); the manual specifies no reaction and no acknowledgement for either variant.
