F31501Encoder 1: Position tracking encoder position outside tolerance window

What it means

F31501 is raised by the position tracking (measuring gear) of Encoder 1. With the drive switched off, the drive/encoder was moved through a distance larger than the tolerance window parameterized in p0413 allows. It is therefore possible that there is no longer any reference between the mechanical system and the encoder. Depending on how the drive is configured, the same condition can also be issued as an alarm or without any reaction instead of as a fault.

Why it appears

  • With the drive switched off, the drive/encoder was moved through a greater distance than the parameterized tolerance window allows.
  • It is possible that the reference between the mechanical system and the encoder no longer exists.

What to check

  1. Select encoder commissioning: set p0010 = 4.
  2. Reset the position tracking: set p0411.2 = 1.
  3. Deselect encoder commissioning: set p0010 = 0.
  4. Acknowledge the fault.
  5. If necessary, adjust the absolute encoder (p2507).

Reading the message value

  • The drive stores the deviation (difference) to the last encoder position in r0949; interpret the value as a decimal number.
  • The value is given in increments of the absolute value; the sign designates the traversing direction.
  • The deviation found is also displayed in r0477.

Parameters the manual names

  • r0949 — fault value: read the deviation to the last encoder position for this fault, interpreted as a decimal number.
  • r0477 — measuring gear position difference: also displays the deviation found for this code.
  • p0413 — measuring gear position tracking tolerance window: the distance limit whose exceedance while switched off triggers F31501.
  • p0010 — drive commissioning parameter filter: set to 4 to select encoder commissioning for the reset, back to 0 to deselect it.
  • p0411 — measuring gear configuration: setting bit .2 to 1 resets the position tracking.
  • p2507 — absolute encoder adjustment status: adjust the absolute encoder here if this is necessary after the reset.

Acknowledging and restarting

Acknowledge the fault once the position tracking has been reset with p0010 = 4, p0411.2 = 1 and p0010 = 0. If it is then still necessary, adjust the absolute encoder (p2507).

Questions technicians ask

What does F31501 mean on a SINAMICS drive?

Encoder 1's position tracking found that, with the drive switched off, the drive/encoder was moved through a larger distance than the tolerance window (p0413) allows. The reference between the mechanical system and the encoder may no longer exist.

How do I clear F31501?

Select encoder commissioning (p0010 = 4), reset the position tracking with p0411.2 = 1 and then deselect encoder commissioning (p0010 = 0). Acknowledge the fault and, if necessary, adjust the absolute encoder (p2507).

Where can I see how far the encoder was moved?

r0949 holds the fault value: the deviation to the last encoder position in increments of the absolute value, with the sign giving the traversing direction. The same deviation is also displayed in r0477.

Can F31501 appear as something other than a fault?

Yes. Depending on how the drive is configured, the same condition can also be issued as an alarm or without any reaction.
