What it means
F33117 reports that the encoder evaluation for Encoder 3 found the inversion of a square-wave encoder (bipolar, double ended) missing: signals A*, B* and R* are not inverted with respect to the signals A, B and R. Depending on how the drive is configured, the same condition can also be reported only as an alarm or without any reaction instead of as a fault.
Why it appears
- For a square-wave encoder (bipolar, double ended), the drive receives signals A*, B* and R* that are not inverted with respect to signals A, B and R.
- On an SMC30 (only Article No. 6SL3055-0AA00-5CA0 or 6SL3055-0AA00-5CA1), a CUA32 or a CU310-2/CU310: a square-wave encoder without track R is used while track monitoring (p0405.2 = 1) is activated.
What to check
- Check the encoder and its cable.
- Check whether the encoder supplies the signals together with the associated inverted signals, i.e. A* against A, B* against B and R* against R.
- On an SMC30 (Article No. 6SL3055-0AA00-5CA0 or 6SL3055-0AA00-5CA1): check the setting of p0405 — p0405.2 = 1 is only possible if the encoder is connected at X520.
- If a square-wave encoder without track R is connected, set jumpers at the encoder input: bridge pin 10 (reference signal R) to pin 7 (encoder power supply, ground) and pin 11 (reference signal R inverted) to pin 4 (encoder power supply) — at X520 on the SMC30, at X220 on the CUA32 or at X23 on the CU310-2/CU310.
Reading the message value
The drive enters the fault cause into r0949; interpret the value in binary:
- Bit 16: error on track A.
- Bit 17: error on track B.
- Bit 18: error on track R.
- Bits 0 ... 15: only for internal Siemens troubleshooting.
Parameters the manual names
- r0949 — read the fault value here in binary; bit 16, 17 or 18 tells you which track (A, B or R) the inversion error was detected on.
- p0405 — bit 2 activates track monitoring for the square-wave encoder; with p0405.2 = 1 this message appears when the connected encoder has no track R, and on the SMC30 the bit can only be set with the encoder connected at X520.
Acknowledging and restarting
Acknowledge the fault immediately, for example at the operator panel, and restart the drive once the encoder inversion fault has been eliminated.
What differs between the drive families
Straight from the manuals' own fields — F33117 is not described identically everywhere.

Questions technicians ask
What does fault F33117 in SINAMICS mean?
The evaluation of Encoder 3 has detected that, on a square-wave encoder (bipolar, double ended), the signals A*, B* and R* are not inverted with respect to A, B and R.
How do I fix fault F33117?
Check the encoder and its cable and verify that the encoder really supplies the signals together with their inverted counterparts. If the encoder has no track R, set the jumpers described on this page, check p0405, and then acknowledge the fault immediately.
Why does F33117 appear although my encoder has no R track?
Because track monitoring (p0405.2 = 1) is activated on an SMC30 of the specified article numbers, a CUA32 or a CU310-2/CU310. Either correct p0405 — on the SMC30 p0405.2 = 1 is only possible with the encoder at X520 — or bridge the R-track pins as described above.
Which track does F33117 refer to?
The fault value in r0949, read in binary, names it: bit 16 means track A, bit 17 track B and bit 18 track R.
