What it means

F32111 is raised against Encoder 2 when the connected absolute encoder itself reports an internal error: the encoder's error word arrives with error bits set, and the drive forwards this detailed information as the fault value. The G130/G150 manual titles the code "Encoder 2: Absolute encoder internal fault", the S120/S150 manual "Encoder 2: Encoder signals an internal error (detailed information)" — the description is the same. Depending on the drive configuration, the same condition can also be issued as an alarm or with no reaction at all.

Why it appears

  • The absolute encoder signals an internal error: its fault word supplies fault bits that have been set, and the drive relays them for Encoder 2.
  • Encoder-internal defects: the lighting system has failed (bit 0), the signal amplitude is too low (bit 1), the position value is incorrect (bit 2), or supplementary information yyyy = 1 indicates a defective encoder.
  • 5 V encoder power supply faults: an overvoltage condition (bit 3), an undervoltage condition (bit 4) or an overcurrent condition (bit 5).
  • The battery must be changed (bit 6) — this applies only to encoders with battery back-up.

What to check

  1. Determine how the fault value can be read: with p0404.8 = 1 the value in r0949, interpreted binary, reads as yyyyxxxx hex (yyyy = supplementary information, xxxx = fault cause); with p0404.8 = 0 the value is intended for internal Siemens troubleshooting and gives you no decodable bits.
  2. If bit 0, bit 1, bit 2 or bit 5 is set: the encoder is defective. Replace the encoder; where the motor encoder has a direct DRIVE-CLiQ socket, replace the motor.
  3. If bit 3 or bit 4 is set (5 V power supply voltage fault): when an SMC is used, check the plug-in cable between the encoder and the SMC or replace the SMC; when a motor encoder with a direct DRIVE-CLiQ connection, or a motor with DRIVE-CLiQ, is used, replace the motor.
  4. If bit 6 is set: change the battery (only for encoders with battery back-up).
  5. If yyyy = 1: the encoder is defective — replace the encoder.

Reading the message value

  • The message value carries two placeholders: %1 = fault cause (binary), %2 = additional information.
  • With p0404.8 = 1, the fault value in r0949, interpreted binary, is yyyyxxxx hex: yyyy = supplementary information, xxxx = fault cause.
  • yyyy = 0, Bit 0: Lighting system failed.
  • yyyy = 0, Bit 1: Signal amplitude too low.
  • yyyy = 0, Bit 2: Position value incorrect.
