F08501PN/COMM BOARD: Setpoint timeout

What it means

F08501 means that the drive has stopped receiving setpoints from the higher-level control system: the reception of setpoints from the COMM BOARD («PN/COMM BOARD: Setpoint timeout») or from PROFINET («PROFINET: Setpoint timeout») has been interrupted. Depending on the drive's configuration, the same condition can also be signalled as an alarm (A) or without a fault reaction (N). The affected drive object goes down with its configured fault reaction, and the fault must be acknowledged before the drive will restart.

Why it appears

  • The reception of setpoints from the COMM BOARD, or on drives that receive their setpoints directly via PROFINET, from PROFINET, has been interrupted.
  • The bus connection is interrupted.
  • The controller is switched off.
  • The controller is set into the STOP state.
  • Where the drive uses a separate COMM BOARD, the board itself can be defective.

What to check

  1. Restore the bus connection to the higher-level control system.
  2. Set the controller to RUN.
  3. If the error is repeated, check the update time set in the bus configuration (HW Config).
  4. Check the monitoring time that belongs to this fault: p8840 (COMM BOARD monitoring time) on the drives with a COMM BOARD, p2044 on the G115D and G120C.

Parameters the manual names

  • p8840 — COMM BOARD monitoring time (CB t_mon): the manuals reference this monitoring time for F08501 and say to look at it when the setpoint timeout repeats.
  • p2044 — the set monitoring time that the G115D and G120C manuals say to check if the fault occurs repeatedly.

Acknowledging and restarting

Acknowledge the fault immediately once the cause is removed: with the bus connection restored and the controller back in RUN, the fault can be acknowledged without waiting, after which the drive can be restarted.

What differs between the drive families

Questions technicians ask

What causes F08501 on a SINAMICS drive?

The drive no longer receives setpoints from the higher-level controller: the bus connection is interrupted, the controller is switched off or set into the STOP state, or — where a separate COMM BOARD is used — the board is defective.

How do I clear and acknowledge F08501?

Restore the bus connection, set the controller to RUN, then acknowledge the fault immediately and restart the drive. If the fault repeats, check the update time set in the bus configuration (HW Config).

Which monitoring time belongs to F08501?

The manuals for drives with a COMM BOARD reference p8840 (COMM BOARD monitoring time), while the G115D and G120C manuals point to the set monitoring time p2044.

Why does F08501 come back after I reset it?

If the error is repeated, the manuals say to check the update time in the bus configuration (HW Config) and the monitoring time belonging to the fault (p8840 or p2044 depending on the family).
