F33163Encoder 3: Analog sensor position value exceeds limit value

What it means

F33163 reports that the position value of Encoder 3, the analog sensor being evaluated, has left the permissible range of -0.5 ... +0.5. The drive stores a fault value in r0949 that identifies which source delivered the out-of-range value, so two different situations hide behind the same code: the value can come either from the LVDT sensor or from the encoder characteristic. As a fault, the message stops the drive with an OFF1 stop and the fault must be acknowledged before the drive can be restarted. Depending on how the drive is configured, the same condition can also be issued only as an alarm (A) or entirely without reaction (N); in both of those cases no automatic reaction takes place and nothing has to be acknowledged.

Why it appears

  • The position value of Encoder 3 has exceeded the permissible range of -0.5 ... +0.5.
  • With fault value 1 in r0949: the impermissible position value comes from the LVDT sensor.
  • With fault value 2 in r0949: the impermissible position value comes from the encoder characteristic.

What to check

  1. Read the fault value in r0949, interpreting it as a decimal number, to see which source delivered the out-of-range position value.
  2. For fault value = 1 (position value from the LVDT sensor): check the LVDT ratio in p4678, then check the reference signal connection at track B.
  3. For fault value = 2 (position value from the encoder characteristic): check the coefficients of the characteristic in p4663 ... p4666.

Reading the message value

  • The drive writes the fault value into r0949; interpret it as a decimal number.
  • 1: Position value from the LVDT sensor.
  • 2: Position value from the encoder characteristic.

Parameters the manual names

  • r0949 — displays the fault value for this message; read it as a decimal number to tell whether the out-of-range position came from the LVDT sensor (1) or from the encoder characteristic (2).
  • p4678 — Analog sensor LVDT ratio; check this ratio when the fault value is 1.
  • p4663 — Encoder characteristic K0; one of the characteristic coefficients to check when the fault value is 2.
  • p4666 — Encoder characteristic K3; one of the characteristic coefficients to check when the fault value is 2.

Acknowledging and restarting

As a fault, F33163 can only be acknowledged with pulse inhibit, i.e. once the pulses of the drive are inhibited. After a successful acknowledgement the drive can be restarted. If the drive is configured to issue the condition as an alarm (A) or without reaction (N), no acknowledgement is required.

Questions technicians ask

What does fault F33163 mean on a SINAMICS drive?

The position value of Encoder 3, an analog sensor, has exceeded the permissible range of -0.5 ... +0.5. The fault value in r0949 shows whether the value came from the LVDT sensor (1) or from the encoder characteristic (2).

How do I fix F33163?

For fault value 1, check the LVDT ratio in p4678 and the reference signal connection at track B; for fault value 2, check the characteristic coefficients p4663 ... p4666. Then acknowledge the fault with pulse inhibit and restart the drive.

Can F33163 appear as an alarm instead of a fault?

Yes. Depending on the drive's configuration, the same condition can also be issued as an alarm (A) or without any reaction (N); in both cases there is no automatic reaction and no acknowledgement is needed.

Why does F33163 occur even though the sensor signal itself is present?

With fault value 2 the position value was calculated from the encoder characteristic rather than taken from the LVDT sensor, so the coefficients in p4663 ... p4666 are the first place to look.
