What it means
The drive monitors the signal level of the zero mark (track R) of Encoder 1. The manuals print the condition under two titles — “Signal level zero mark (track R) outside tolerance” and “Amplitude error track R” — but describe the same monitoring: the fault is raised when the amplitude of the zero-mark/reference track signal (track R) no longer lies within the tolerance bandwidth. This happens either when the unipolar voltage level (RP/RN) is exceeded or when the differential amplitude is undershot.
The response thresholds of the unipolar signal levels of the encoder are between < 1400 mV and > 3500 mV; the response threshold for the differential signal level is < -1600 mV. Depending on the drive configuration, the same condition can also be issued as an alarm (A) or with no reaction (N); in both of those cases there is no reaction and no acknowledgement.
Why it appears
- The zero-mark signal level (track R) of Encoder 1 does not lie within the tolerance bandwidth.
- The unipolar voltage level (RP/RN) is exceeded, or the differential amplitude is undershot.
What to check
- Check the speed range — the frequency characteristic (amplitude characteristic) of the measuring equipment may not be sufficient for the speed range used.
- Check that the encoder cables and shielding are routed in compliance with EMC.
- Check the plug connections and contacts of the encoder cable.
- Check the encoder type — an encoder with zero marks must be used.
- Check that the zero mark is connected and that the signal cables RP and RN are connected correctly, not with reversed polarity.
- Replace the encoder cable.
- If the coding disk is soiled or the lighting is aged, replace the encoder.
Reading the message value
- The message value is “R track: %1”. In r0949, interpreted hexadecimal, the fault value is yyyyxxxx hex: yyyy = 0, and xxxx is the signal level of track R (16 bits with sign).
- A signal level of 500 mV peak value corresponds to the numerical value 5333 hex = 21299 dec.
The analog value of the amplitude error is not measured at the same time with the hardware fault output by the Sensor Module.
The fault value can therefore only be represented between -32768 ... 32767 dec (-770 ... 770 mV).- The signal level is only evaluated when the Sensor Module properties are available (r0459.31 = 1) and monitoring is active (p0437.31 = 1).

- r0459 — Sensor Module properties: bit 31 must read 1 (properties available) before the signal level is evaluated at all.
- p0437 — Sensor Module configuration: bit 31 = 1 activates the monitoring of the signal level.

Acknowledging and restarting
As a fault, F31103 is acknowledged with PULSE INHIBIT: the drive's pulses must be inhibited before the acknowledgement is accepted; once acknowledged, the drive can be restarted. When the same condition is configured as an alarm (A) or with no reaction (N), no acknowledgement is required.
