What it means
A31442 reports that the battery which backs up the multiturn information of Encoder 1 while the drive is switched off has reached its alarm threshold. The manuals print the message both as Encoder 1: Battery voltage alarm threshold reached
and as Encoder 1: Battery voltage pre-alarm
; both titles describe the same battery condition. Depending on how the drive is configured, the same condition can also be issued as a fault (F) or with no reaction (N).
Why it appears
- While the drive is switched off, a battery buffers the multiturn information of Encoder 1.
- The battery voltage has now fallen to the alarm level; if it drops even further, the multiturn information can no longer be buffered.
What to check
- Replace the battery.
Acknowledging and restarting
As an alarm, A31442 requires no acknowledgement, and the drive takes no automatic action on this message. If the drive configuration raises the same condition as a fault instead, it must be acknowledged immediately after the battery has been replaced.
The same on every family
Every manual that describes A31442 gives it the same reaction, acknowledgement and message class.
| Drive family | Reaction | Acknowledge | Message class | Component | Manual |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S120, S150 | NONE | NONE | Actual position/speed value incorrect or not available (11) | Encoder 1 | SINAMICS S120, S150 List Manual · p. 3055 |
| G130, G150 | NONE | NONE | Actual position/speed value incorrect or not available (11) | Encoder 1 | SINAMICS G130, G150 List Manual · p. 1741 |

Questions technicians ask
What does SINAMICS alarm A31442 mean?
The battery that buffers the multiturn information of Encoder 1 while the drive is switched off has reached its alarm threshold. If the voltage drops further, the multiturn information can no longer be buffered.
How do I fix A31442?
Replace the encoder battery. As an alarm the message needs no acknowledgement; if the drive raises the condition as a fault, it must be acknowledged immediately.
Does A31442 stop the SINAMICS drive?
No. The drive takes no automatic action for this message; the multiturn information is only at risk if the battery voltage keeps falling.
