YORK YKWarning - Excess surge detected

On the display

The panel reads Warning - Excess surge detected. This is one of the chiller’s warning messages, so the unit is not tripped: in the configuration the manual describes for this warning — both the surge protection shutdown and extended run settings disabled — the chiller continues to run while the message is displayed. The manual prints the message in two capitalisations, “Warning - Excess surge detected” and “Warning - Excess Surge Detected”; the wording itself is always the same.

What it means

The warning means that the surge window count has exceeded the count limit while the surge protection shutdown is disabled — which is why the chiller raises a warning instead of performing a surge protection shutdown. The conditions attached to the count describe how the machine got there: on SSS and EM starter applications hot gas is disabled, or, if hot gas is enabled, the HGBP valve command is already at 100%; on VSD applications the VSD command frequency is already at maximum frequency, with or without the HGBP valve command at 100%. The chiller keeps running and displays this message.

Why it appears

  • Surge window count above the limit. The warning appears only if the surge protection shutdown is disabled and the surge window count has exceeded the count limit, together with one of the states below.
  • Hot gas disabled on SSS and EM starters. Hot gas is disabled on SSS and EM starter applications.
  • Hot gas at 100% on SSS and EM starters. Hot gas is enabled and the HGBP valve command is 100% on SSS and EM starter applications.
  • VSD at maximum frequency with hot gas disabled. Hot gas is disabled and the VSD command frequency is maximum frequency for VSD applications.
  • VSD at maximum frequency with hot gas at 100%. Hot gas is enabled, the HGBP valve command is 100% and the VSD command frequency is maximum frequency for VSD applications.

Setpoints and thresholds

  • Surge window count and count limit — the warning is tied to the count exceeding the limit, and it can only be cleared manually once the count is back to less than or equal to the count limit, unless another clearing condition is met.
  • 10 min event period — the message may be cleared once the event has been set for more than 10 min; the manual notes that the warning continues after the 10 min period has elapsed until it is cleared manually.
  • Surge protection shutdown (enabled or disabled) — this warning applies only when this setting is disabled; the manual’s surge text treats the surge protection shutdown and extended run (enabled or disabled) settings together, and with both disabled the chiller continues to run under this warning.
  • Hot gas, HGBP and VSD commands — hot gas enabled or disabled, an HGBP valve command of 100% and a VSD command frequency at maximum frequency are the operating states involved in raising the warning.

Reset and restart

The message is cleared manually once one of the manual’s conditions is met: This message can be manually cleared after the surge window count is less than or equal to the count limit, or the event has been set for more than 10 min, or the chiller is not running. To clear it, press the Clear button on the System Details Screen. The surge-protection text adds that the warning keeps running after the 10 min period has elapsed until it is cleared with the Warning Reset key.

Questions engineers ask

What does “Warning - Excess surge detected” mean on a York YK chiller?

It means the surge window count has exceeded the count limit while the surge protection shutdown is disabled. The chiller continues to run with the warning displayed instead of shutting down.

How do I clear the “Warning - Excess surge detected” message?

After the surge window count is less than or equal to the count limit, the event has been set for more than 10 min, or the chiller is not running, press the Clear button on the System Details Screen. The surge-protection text also mentions clearing manually with the Warning Reset key.

Why is my YK still running with an excess surge warning instead of tripping?

Because this warning applies only when the surge protection shutdown is disabled. The manual states that with the shutdown and extended run setpoints disabled the chiller continues to run, displaying this message.

What operating conditions raise this warning?

One of the following must be true: hot gas disabled on SSS and EM starter applications; hot gas enabled with the HGBP valve command at 100% on those applications; hot gas disabled with the VSD at maximum frequency; or hot gas enabled with HGBP at 100% and the VSD at maximum frequency — together with a surge window count above the count limit.
