F32912Encoder 2: Device combination is not permissible

What it means

F32912 is raised for Encoder 2 when the selected device combination is not supported. The drive checks that everything set around this encoder fits together: whether the connected measuring unit can be operated with the EnDat 2.2 converter, whether the set combination of current controller cycle, DP cycle and Safety cycle is supported, and whether the resolution of a linear measuring unit matches the pole pair width of the linear motor. If one of these checks fails, the drive stops with OFF1 and stores the reason as a fault value in r0949, so that the exact incompatibility can be read out.

Why it appears

  • The selected device combination is not supported: the drive has been given a configuration for Encoder 2 that it cannot operate. The fault value states which part of the combination fails — the measuring unit against the EnDat 2.2 converter, the set cycle combination, or the resolution of a linear measuring unit against the pole pair width of the linear motor.

What to check

  1. Read the fault value in r0949; the manual specifies that it must be interpreted as a decimal number, and the message value %1 shows the same number.
  2. Fault value 1003, 1005 or 1006: use a measuring unit that is permissible, i.e. one that can be operated with the EnDat 2.2 converter.
  3. Fault value 2001: set a permissible combination of current controller cycle, DP cycle and Safety cycle; if required, use the standard settings.
  4. Fault value 2002: use a measuring unit with a lower resolution (p0422).

Reading the message value

The message value %1 is the fault value; it can be read in r0949 and must be interpreted as a decimal number. The manual decodes it as follows:

  • 1003 — the connected measuring unit cannot be operated with the EnDat 2.2 converter; for instance, the measuring unit has a pulse number/resolution of 2^n.
  • 1005 — the type of measuring unit (incremental) is not supported by the EnDat 2.2 converter.
  • 1006 — the maximum duration of the EnDat transfer (31.25 µs) was exceeded.
  • 2001 — the set combination of current controller cycle, DP cycle and Safety cycle is not supported by the EnDat 2.2 converter.
  • 2002 — the resolution of the linear measuring unit does not match the pole pair width of the linear motor; the manual specifies: pole pair width, minimum = p0422 * 2^20.

Parameters the manual names

  • r0949 (fault value) — read the fault value here, interpreted as a decimal number, to determine which impermissible combination the drive has detected for Encoder 2.
  • p0422 (absolute encoder linear measuring step resolution, Enc abs meas step) — the step resolution of the linear measuring unit is set here; for fault value 2002 the remedy is a measuring unit with a lower resolution (p0422), and the minimum pole pair width is calculated as p0422 * 2^20.

Acknowledging and restarting

Acknowledging alone does not remove the fault: as long as the combination stays unsupported, the drive raises F32912 again. Correct the measuring unit, the cycle combination or the resolution (p0422) as described above, then acknowledge the fault and restart the drive. In all drive objects the reaction is an OFF1 shutdown, i.e. the motor is brought to a controlled standstill, and the drive only accepts a new start once the fault has been acknowledged.

What differs between the drive families

Questions technicians ask

What does fault F32912 mean?

The drive reports that the device combination selected for Encoder 2 is not supported — for example, the connected measuring unit cannot be operated with the EnDat 2.2 converter. The decimal fault value in r0949 states which case applies.

How do I fix F32912?

Read the fault value in r0949 as a decimal number. For values 1003, 1005 and 1006 use a permissible measuring unit, for 2001 set a permissible cycle combination (if required, the standard settings) and for 2002 use a measuring unit with a lower resolution (p0422).

What does fault value 2002 in F32912 mean?

The resolution of the linear measuring unit does not match the pole pair width of the linear motor; the manual gives the minimum pole pair width as p0422 * 2^20. The remedy is a measuring unit with a lower resolution (p0422).

Why does F32912 come back after acknowledgment?

The fault is raised by the configuration check for Encoder 2. If the measuring unit, the cycle combination or the resolution is not changed, the drive detects the same unsupported combination again after the fault is acknowledged.
