What it means
A32811 is signalled by Encoder 2 when the serial number the encoder now delivers no longer matches the serial number stored in the drive. The drive only performs this comparison on encoders that actually provide a serial number, so for encoders without one no such check takes place. The manual names exactly one situation in which the serial number changes: the encoder was replaced. Depending on how the drive is configured, the same condition can also be signalled as a fault or only noted without any reaction.
Why it appears
- The encoder serial number has changed; the drive only checks this on encoders that deliver a serial number.
- The encoder was replaced.
What to check
- Establish whether the encoder was replaced — this is the only cause the manual names for a changed serial number.
- Mechanically adjust the encoder, then accept its new serial number by setting p0440 = 1.
- With closed-loop position control, note how the adjustment status p2507 interacts with the serial number: it is accepted when the adjustment is started (p2507 = 2), and once the encoder is adjusted (p2507 = 3) the drive checks the serial number for changes and resets the adjustment (p2507 = 1) if it detects one.
- If serial number monitoring should not raise this message again, hide it: in the corresponding encoder data set, enter the serial number as p0441 = FF, p0442 = 0, p0443 = 0, p0444 = 0, p0445 = 0.
Parameters the manual names
- p0440 (Copy encoder serial number) — set to 1 so the drive accepts the encoder's new serial number.
- p0441 (Encoder commissioning serial number part 1) — set to FF, together with the parts below, to hide serial number monitoring.
- p0442 (Encoder commissioning serial number part 2) — set to 0 when hiding serial number monitoring.
- p0443 (Encoder commissioning serial number part 3) — set to 0 when hiding serial number monitoring.
- p0444 (Encoder commissioning serial number part 4) — set to 0 when hiding serial number monitoring.
- p0445 (Encoder commissioning serial number part 5) — set to 0 when hiding serial number monitoring.
- p2507 (LR absolute encoder adjustment status) — shows where the absolute encoder adjustment stands: the new serial number is accepted when the adjustment starts (p2507 = 2), and from p2507 = 3 a changed serial number resets the adjustment (p2507 = 1).
Acknowledging and restarting
Once the encoder has been mechanically adjusted and its new serial number accepted with p0440 = 1 — or serial number monitoring has been hidden with the settings above — the cause is gone and the message no longer appears. While the drive signals the condition as an alarm there is nothing to acknowledge; when the drive signals it as a fault, acknowledge it straight away before restarting the drive.
The same on every family
Every manual that describes A32811 gives it the same reaction, acknowledgement and message class.

Questions technicians ask
What does A32811 mean on a SINAMICS drive?
It is signalled by Encoder 2 when the encoder serial number has changed. The drive only checks serial numbers on encoders that provide one, and the change normally means the encoder was replaced.
How do I clear A32811 after replacing an encoder?
Mechanically adjust the encoder and then accept its new serial number with p0440 = 1. As an alarm the message then disappears by itself and needs no acknowledgement.
Can I switch off the serial number check behind A32811?
Yes. In the corresponding encoder data set, enter the serial number as p0441 = FF and p0442 = 0, p0443 = 0, p0444 = 0, p0445 = 0 to hide serial number monitoring.
What does p2507 have to do with A32811?
p2507 is the LR absolute encoder adjustment status. With closed-loop position control the new serial number is accepted when the adjustment starts (p2507 = 2); once the encoder is adjusted (p2507 = 3), a changed serial number resets the adjustment (p2507 = 1).
