The display reads Motor - High winding temperature. The manuals also print this message as MOTOR - HIGH WINDING TEMPERATURE. It is listed with the safety fault messages for this chiller: it is a safety shutdown, not an advisory.
What it means
This message is a safety shutdown of the chiller on motor winding temperature. The shutdown is set at the Motor High Winding Temp Fault Threshold value, an Admin programmable setpoint with a default of 270.0°F (132.2°C). The shutdown does not occur when the winding temperature protection setpoint is set to Disabled on the motor details screen, and it does not act on any RTD input registering as an open RTD or on any individual winding temperature sensor that has been disabled.

- Any of the enabled motor winding temperatures exceeded the programmed high winding temperature shutdown threshold plus the programmed winding hotspot allowance threshold for 3 s continuously.
- The average winding temperature exceeded the programmed high winding temperature shutdown threshold for 3 s continuously.
Setpoints and thresholds
- Motor High Winding Temp Fault Threshold — Admin programmable setpoint, default 270.0°F (132.2°C). The safety shutdown is set at this value; the manual notes that only in extreme cases will it ever be changed, under the guidance of Johnson Controls PTS and engineering.
- High winding temperature shutdown threshold — the programmed threshold both trip conditions are measured against: individual windings trip at this value plus the winding hotspot allowance threshold, the average winding temperature at this value itself.
- Winding temperature protection setpoint — on the motor details screen; while it is set to Disabled, this safety shutdown does not occur.
Reset and restart
Recovery is a cool-down followed by a manual clear. The manual states: The chiller can be started after all winding temperatures decrease to at least 18°F (10°C) below the shutdown threshold and the Clear button is pressed next to the listed event on the Systems Details Screen.
No start is possible before the windings have cooled to that margin below the shutdown threshold.
