N01004Internal software error

What it means

N01004 signals that the Control Unit (CU) has detected an internal software error. It is raised as a message without a reaction and without acknowledgement. Depending on how the drive is configured, the same condition can also be issued as fault F01004 or as alarm A01004. The fault value belonging to the message is stored in r0949 in hexadecimal; the manual designates it for internal Siemens troubleshooting only and gives no decoding for on-site use.

Why it appears

  • An internal software error has occurred in the Control Unit.

What to check

  1. Read out the diagnostics parameter r9999 (software error internal supplementary diagnostics) — it supplements the message with diagnostics for this internal software error.
  2. Contact Technical Support; the contents of r9999 and the fault value in r0949 are what internal Siemens troubleshooting works with.

Reading the message value

  • The drive writes the fault value to r0949 in hexadecimal. The manual does not decode it: the value is only for internal Siemens troubleshooting.

Parameters the manual names

  • r0949 — fault value: holds the value of this message in hexadecimal; it is not decoded on site because it serves internal Siemens troubleshooting.
  • r9999 — software error internal supplementary diagnostics: read this out and quote it to Technical Support when reporting the internal software error.

Acknowledging and restarting

N01004 requires no acknowledgement and triggers no drive reaction. If the drive raises the same condition as fault F01004, the drive coasts down (OFF2) and the fault is acknowledged only by switching the power off and on again (POWER ON); as alarm A01004 there is likewise no reaction and no acknowledgement. In every form the message is only resolved by eliminating the software error itself — hence the readout of r9999 and the report to Technical Support.

Questions technicians ask

What does SINAMICS message N01004 mean?

It reports an internal software error in the Control Unit. It is issued as a message without a reaction; depending on the drive configuration the same condition can also appear as fault F01004 or alarm A01004.

How do I clear N01004?

Read out the diagnostics parameter r9999 and contact Technical Support. No acknowledgement is required; if the drive raised the condition as fault F01004 instead, switching the power off and on again (POWER ON) acknowledges it.

Does N01004 stop the drive?

No — as N01004 the drive continues with no reaction. Only the fault form F01004 coasts the drive down (OFF2), and it restarts only after POWER ON.

What does r0949 contain for N01004?

The fault value in hexadecimal. The manual does not decode it because it is only for internal Siemens troubleshooting; the supplementary diagnostics for Technical Support are in r9999.
