Vibrations can sometimes cause severe damage to Bourdon tube pressure gauges. They cause pointer fluttering and, with prolonged stress, damage to the measuring system or even total failure. The most effective protection against these effects is provided by measuring instruments with a case filling.

Liquid-filled pressure gauges are used in applications involving high dynamic shock and vibration loads. The filling liquid dampens the vibrations that occur and thus relieves the mechanical components of the pressure gauge. The principle is simple: the pressure gauge housing is filled with a liquid, usually glycerine or silicone oil. In the event of vibrations, the case filling optimally dampens the vibrations of the Bourdon tube, transmission mechanism and pointer mechanism. This prevents the pointer from fluttering, which means that the displayed measured value remains clearly legible. At the same time, the measuring system is protected from premature wear, as the filling fluid acts as a lubricant for the moving components. This considerably extends the service life of the pressure gauge. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/ILTgNUow3i4?si=HY4eC0_OUut-v2fR" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe> The filling liquid dampens pressure peaks, shocks and vibrations and thus protects the mechanics of the pressure gauge. This counteracts material fatigue and malfunctions. Another decisive factor for the user is the guarantee of readability of the current pressure. The filling liquid ensures that the pointer remains steady even when subjected to strong vibrations. Without liquid damping, the pointer would not indicate the actual pressure, but would move back and forth according to the vibrations or pulsations (so-called pointer flutter). In the event of resonance, deflection angles of over 180° can even occur. Last but not least, at low ambient temperatures, the sight glass can fog up and possibly ice up, which the filling liquid is able to prevent.
