YORK YMC2VSD SHUTDOWN - REQUESTING FAULT DATA

On the display

The control center shows VSD SHUTDOWN - REQUESTING FAULT DATA. The manuals print the message in two capitalisations — VSD SHUTDOWN - REQUESTING FAULT DATA and VSD shutdown - REQUESTING FAULT DATA — with identical wording.

What it means

This is a short-lived status message, not the fault itself. It appears when the VSD has shut the chiller down and the control center does not yet know why: the cause of the fault has not yet come over the serial communications link. The trip happens when the VSD opens the Motor Controller VSD Stop Contacts, which sit on the VSD Logic Board and are wired across terminals TB6-16 and TB6-53 of the control center. The control center then asks the VSD for the cause over the serial link, and because those communications are started every 2 seconds, the notice normally stays up for only a few seconds before a different VSD fault message appears. The manuals place this message among the cycling shutdown messages and also among the safety shutdown messages.

Why it appears

  • The VSD has tripped the chiller off and, at that moment, the control center is still waiting for the VSD to report over the serial link what caused the shutdown.
  • The shutdown is carried out through the Motor Controller VSD Stop Contacts on the VSD Logic Board, which are wired across terminals TB6-16 and TB6-53 of the control center.

Setpoints and thresholds

  • 2 seconds — the interval at which the control center initiates serial communications with the VSD; this cadence is why the notice is normally visible only briefly.
  • 20 seconds — if the control center still has no cause of the fault after this long on the serial link, it treats the cause as not forthcoming and the display becomes VSD - STOP CONTACTS OPEN.

Reset and restart

The notice ends by itself: once the cause arrives over the serial link, it is shown as its own VSD fault message; if nothing arrives within 20 seconds, the display changes to VSD - STOP CONTACTS OPEN. For the cycling shutdown listing, the manual's action reads: Cycling shutdown: the chiller will automatically restart when the cycling condition clears.

Questions engineers ask

What does VSD SHUTDOWN - REQUESTING FAULT DATA mean on a YORK YMC2?

The VSD has shut the chiller down, and the control center is still waiting to be told over the serial link what caused the trip. The message is a short-lived notice while that report is requested.

How long does VSD SHUTDOWN - REQUESTING FAULT DATA stay on the display?

Usually just a few seconds, since serial communications with the VSD begin every 2 seconds. If no cause arrives within 20 seconds, the display switches to VSD - STOP CONTACTS OPEN instead.

How do I clear VSD SHUTDOWN - REQUESTING FAULT DATA on a YMC2?

Nothing is pressed for this notice: it changes to the actual VSD fault message on its own. The cycling shutdown listing adds that the chiller restarts automatically once the cycling condition clears.
