YORK YKOil - Low viscosity

On the display

The panel shows Oil - Low viscosity; the manuals also print it in capitals as OIL - LOW VISCOSITY. It appears in the manuals' Safety fault messages list as well as in the display messages list, and both describe it as a safety fault.

What it means

This is a safety fault that only applies when the Oil Quality Protection and Oil Cooling control are both enabled. When the trip occurs, the oil kinematic viscosity of the running chiller has stayed below one of the JCI Service programmable trip thresholds long enough to meet the long trip or the short trip condition set out under causes.

Why it appears

  • Long trip: after 10 min of running, the oil kinematic viscosity stayed below the JCI Service programmable Low Viscosity Trip Threshold Long Trip (default 8.0 cSt) for 5 min.
  • Short trip: after 1 min of running, the viscosity stayed below the JCI Service programmable Low Viscosity Trip Threshold Short Trip (default 6.0 cSt) for 10 s.

What to check

  1. Confirm that both Oil Quality Protection and Oil Cooling control are enabled, since the fault only applies when they are.
  2. Check the running time and the oil kinematic viscosity against the two trip conditions listed under causes to see which one the chiller met.

Setpoints and thresholds

  • Low Viscosity Trip Threshold Long Trip — a JCI Service programmable parameter, default 8.0 cSt; the long trip needs 5 min below it once the chiller has run 10 min.
  • Low Viscosity Trip Threshold Short Trip — a JCI Service programmable parameter, default 6.0 cSt; the short trip needs 10 s below it once the chiller has run 1 min.

Reset and restart

The manuals allow the fault to be cleared only once the chiller has stopped. On the Systems Details Screen, press the Clear button next to the listed event; the other manuals word the same step as selecting the Clear Fault key.

Questions engineers ask

What does Oil - Low viscosity mean on a YORK YK chiller?

It is a safety fault telling you that the oil kinematic viscosity fell below a programmable trip threshold. It only applies when Oil Quality Protection and Oil Cooling control are both enabled.

What viscosity triggers the Oil - Low viscosity trip?

The long trip needs the viscosity below the Low Viscosity Trip Threshold Long Trip, default 8.0 cSt, for 5 min after 10 min of running. The short trip needs it below the Short Trip threshold, default 6.0 cSt, for 10 s after 1 min of running.

How do I clear the Oil - Low viscosity fault?

Wait until the chiller has stopped, then press the Clear button next to the listed event on the Systems Details Screen, or select the Clear Fault key as the other manuals describe.
