YORK YKlow oil pressure (OP)

On the display

The panel shows low oil pressure (OP); one of the manuals prints the same message as Low oil pressure (OP). The manual places the message among the safety controls, under safety shutdowns and warnings, and lists it again in the troubleshooting tables.

What it means

The unit is shutting down on low oil pressure. The fault tables describe the message as a condition on which the unit shuts down: the chiller is stopping because the oil is no longer lubricating it correctly. What you are seeing is a shutdown in progress, and the manual treats it as one of the safety shutdowns of the machine.

Why it appears

  • Incorrect lubrication — the one cause the tables name for this shutdown, brought about by restricted oil lines
  • Restricted oil passages
  • Dirty oil filters

What to check

  1. Change the oil filter element.
  2. Examine the oil filter element for the presence of aluminum particles.
  3. Read the finding in context: aluminum gas seal rings can contact the impeller and account for some aluminum particles accumulating in the oil filter, especially during the initial start up and the first several months of operation.
  4. If aluminum particles continue to accumulate and the same conditions continue to stop unit operation after a new filter is installed, notify the nearest Johnson Controls office to request the presence of a Johnson Controls Service Technician.

Questions engineers ask

What does low oil pressure (OP) mean on a YORK YK chiller?

It means the unit is shutting down on low oil pressure — the chiller is stopping because the oil is no longer lubricating it correctly.

Why does my YORK YK shut down on low oil pressure (OP)?

The tables give incorrect lubrication as the cause, brought about by restricted oil lines, restricted oil passages, or dirty oil filters.

How do I fix low oil pressure (OP) on a YORK YK?

Change the oil filter element and examine it for aluminum particles. If aluminum keeps accumulating and the same conditions stop the unit again after a new filter, ask the nearest Johnson Controls office for a Johnson Controls Service Technician.

Is aluminum in the oil filter normal on a YK?

Some can be: aluminum gas seal rings can contact the impeller, especially during initial start up and the first several months of operation. It becomes a service matter when particles keep accumulating and the trips continue after a new filter is fitted.
