On the display
The 4100ES display shows Extra Device. It is a trouble indication listed in the manuals' IDNet troubleshooting sections. Only one such message is shown: the panel displays Extra Device once, regardless of the number of extra devices it has found on the channel.
What it means
The message reports that one or more extra devices are on the system. An extra device, as the manuals define it, is a device that has not been configured for the IDNet channel. Two of the troubleshooting tables add a second reading of the same message: it also appears when a device is at an incorrect address on the ID-Net loops. Whatever the panel has found, and however many devices are involved, it still shows only the one message.
Why it appears
- One or more extra devices — devices that have not been configured for the IDNet channel — are present on the loop or on the system.
- The message is also listed for a device at an incorrect address on the ID-Net loops.
What to check
- View the trouble log. The manuals state that this will reveal the extra device address; it is the action they give for this message.
- Identify the device at the address the log shows.
- Check whether that device is configured for the IDNet channel — by the manuals' definition, an extra device is one that has not been configured for the IDNet channel.
- Check the device's address as well: a device at an incorrect address is named in the manuals as a cause of this message.
Questions engineers ask
What does Extra Device mean on a Simplex 4100ES?
One or more devices that have not been configured for the IDNet channel are on the system. The manuals also list a device at an incorrect address as a cause of the same message.
How do I find which device is causing the trouble?
View the trouble log: the manuals say viewing it will reveal the extra device address. Then check whether the device at that address is configured for the IDNet channel or is at an incorrect address.
If several devices are unconfigured, will the panel show several messages?
No. Only one Extra Device message appears, regardless of the number of extra devices found; the trouble log gives the address.
Can a device at the wrong address cause Extra Device?
Yes. Two of the troubleshooting tables list a device at an incorrect address on the ID-Net loops as a cause of this message, alongside unconfigured devices.
