תיאור
המתג המגנטי מורכב ממוליכי מגע שטוחים, אשר אטומים הרמטית בתוך צינור זכוכית מלא בגז אינרטי (מגע ריד). כאשר מקרבים מגנט קבוע, קצות מוליכי המגע החופפים נמשכים זה לזה ומתאחדים באמצעות קפיץ לכדי מגע. עם הסרת המגנט הקבוע, מוליכי המגע מתמגנטים-בחזרה מיד וחוזרים למצבם הרגיל.
המרווח האווירי בין קצות מוליכי המגע הוא רק 0.2 ... 0.3 mm ולמוליכי המגע עצמם מסת ההזזה וכוח הקפיץ שלהם קטנים מאוד. לכן המתג המגנטי מיתוג כמעט ללא אינרציה, וניתן להתייחס אליו כאל "רכיב כמעט-אלקטרוני".
