YORK YKVSD INITIALIZATION FAILED

On the display

The panel shows VSD INITIALIZATION FAILED. The manuals print the message only in this form.

What it means

Every time power is applied, all boards run an initialization process: memory is cleared, program jumper positions are verified and serial communications links are set up. This message means that the process did not complete successfully. Communication among the VSD logic, the filter logic, the ACC and the Microboard must take place during initialization; if it does not, this message appears before any other message can be generated.

Why it appears

  • The control center and the VSD were not energized at the same time — pulling the fuse in the control center to remove power creates the problem.
  • A power interruption to the VSD logic board also generates this message, for example from a blown fuse.
  • The EPROMs are not the correct version for each VSD board or are not installed correctly; they are made as a set and must not be swapped between earlier and later versions.
  • Serial data communications were not established.
  • With the IEEE-519 Filter option included, the '519' Logic board is in continuous reset, and the filter logic board's LEDs blink alternately.

What to check

  1. Energize the Micro-Panel and the VSD at the same time: power up by closing the main disconnect on the VSD cabinet with all fuses in place, and do not pull the fuse in the control panel to make wiring changes.
  2. Check that no fuse is blown and causing loss of power to the VSD logic board.
  3. Verify the EPROMs: each VSD-Micropanel system holds a total of seven (7) EPROMs, made as a set that cannot be intermixed between earlier and later styles of units. The ACC EPROM belongs in the ACC board, the Micropanel EPROM in the Microboard, and so on, with every pin seated correctly in its EPROM socket.
  4. Confirm that serial data communications are established: press the OPTIONS key and read the %Job FLA value shown. If this parameter and all other VSD parameters read zero, there is a serial communications link or EPROM problem; the manual's write-ups for 'Serial Receive Fault' and 'FLTR Serial Receive Fault' cover these links.
  5. If the IEEE-519 Filter option is included, make sure the '519' Logic board is not in continuous reset — its filter logic board LEDs blink alternately when it is.
  6. To rule out the '519' filter as the cause of the initialization failure, disconnect it: set the filter logic board's SW1 switch to OFF and unplug the 16 wire ribbon cable that runs between the '519' logic and VSD logic boards.

Questions engineers ask

What does VSD INITIALIZATION FAILED mean on a YORK YK chiller?

At power-up every board runs an initialization process that clears memory, checks program jumper positions and establishes serial communications links. The message means that this process did not complete successfully.

Why does the YORK YK show VSD INITIALIZATION FAILED?

The manual lists several causes: the control center and the VSD not energized at the same time, a power interruption to the VSD logic board, EPROMs of the wrong version or fitted incorrectly, serial data communications not established, or — with the IEEE-519 Filter option — a '519' Logic board in continuous reset.

How can I confirm serial communications after VSD INITIALIZATION FAILED?

Press the OPTIONS key and read the %Job FLA value shown. If this parameter and all other VSD parameters read zero, there is a serial communications link or EPROM problem.

How do I rule out the IEEE-519 filter as the cause?

Set the filter logic board's SW1 switch to OFF and unplug the 16 wire ribbon cable that runs between the '519' logic and VSD logic boards. A board in continuous reset shows its filter logic board LEDs blinking alternately.
