YORK YKVSD - High phase A, B, or C inverter baseplate temperature

On the display

The display reads VSD - High phase A, B, or C inverter baseplate temperature. The manual places this message in the medium voltage variable speed drive safety fault messages group, so it is a safety shutdown of the drive, not an ordinary status notice. A single wording covers all three phases: the phase named in the message (A, B, or C) is the one whose inverter baseplate is involved.

What it means

The inverter baseplate (heatsink) of the stated phase has overheated and the drive has shut down to protect itself. For the medium voltage drive the manual gives the trip point directly: This shutdown occurs if the stated phase heatsink temperature exceeds 175°F (79.4°C). For VSD and LVSD model drives the same message is described as a shutdown that occurs when the baseplate temperature exceeds the trip temperature for that drive size. While the drive cools, the fans and water pump remain energized until all the inverter heatsink temperatures fall below the reset temperatures.

  2. Expect cooling to continue on its own: the fans and water pump remain energized until all the inverter heatsink temperatures fall below the reset temperatures.
  3. Wait for the release point — on the medium voltage drive the fault is released when all the heatsink temperatures fall below 145°F (62.8°C).
  4. Start the chiller only after the fault condition has cleared, then clear the event as described under Reset.

Reset and restart

The drive releases the fault itself once every heatsink has cooled below the release temperature — no key press clears it while the drive is still hot. After that, the manuals give two clearing paths depending on the control at the panel. For the medium voltage drive: The chiller can be started after the fault is cleared on the starter, and the Clear button is pressed next to the listed event on the Systems Details screen. For VSD and LVSD model drives: The chiller can be started after the fault condition clears, and the CLEAR FAULT key is pressed on the display.
