On the display
The panel shows the label Surge Avoidance Surge Detected. It is an LED on the VGD screen of the control center. It illuminates only momentarily — it lights for the moment a surge is detected and then goes out again. On this model it replaces the LED formerly labeled Surge Detected, and on units running older software versions the manuals list the same indication under that earlier name, so an older panel may show Surge Detected for the same condition.
What it means
The LED illuminates momentarily when a surge is detected by the Surge Protection feature. Its scope depends on the drive fitted: on a unit equipped with a VSD or MV VSD, it reports only the surges detected while the drive is running at maximum frequency. Surges that occur while the drive runs below maximum frequency are not shown by this LED; the manual records them in the separate ACC Surge Count, which increments when a surge is detected while the drive is running at less than maximum frequency. The LED state is available as data slot 8319 (Surge Avoidance Surge Detected), with the associated counter in slot 8238 (Surge Avoidance Surge Count). The fault table entry for this condition lists no action.
Why it appears
- Full speed surges detected — the fault table lists this as the cause: the compressor surged while running at full speed, which on VSD or MV VSD units means at maximum drive frequency.
Setpoints and thresholds
- Surge Margin Adjust — listed by the manufacturer with this LED on the surge avoidance screens; this value determines how close the frequency reduction will be allowed to get to the surge line.
- Surge Map Count — displays the total number of data points in the surge map.
- Surge Avoidance Surge Count — the associated surge counter, held in slot 8238; the LED signal itself is slot 8319.
