What it means
This is a software-generated VSD safety: the IGBT baseplate temperature in a compressor's inverter power module has exceeded the software trip point. It is a system fault for all units, and the unit shuts down with a controlled ramped shutdown. The manual notes that 3-compressor chillers operate at higher baseplate temperatures than 4-compressor chillers, which is why their trip limit is set higher.
Why it appears
- The inverter power module baseplate temperature on one or more compressors rose above the software limit for the chiller size.
- Each compressor's inverter power module contains an internal temperature sensor that monitors baseplate temperature; the control compares these sensor readings in software against the limit for the configuration.
Setpoints and thresholds
- 2-compressor chillers: each system's sensor is compared individually to a limit of 218°F.
- 3-compressor chillers: the baseplate temperatures of compressors 1 and 3 are OR'd together and the highest is compared in software to 232°F; compressor 2's individual power module sensor is also compared to 232°F.
- 4-compressor chillers: compressors 1 and 3 are OR'd together and compressors 2 and 4 are OR'd together, each compared in software to a limit of 218°F.
- Restart threshold: the system is allowed to restart when the inverter power module baseplate temperatures fall below 165°F.
- Lockout threshold: the safety locks out on the 3rd fault within 90 minutes.
Reset and restart
This is an auto-restart safety. After a fault the fan(s) and water pump remain energized until the inverter power module baseplate temperature(s) fall below 165°F; the system is allowed to restart once the baseplate temperatures drop below this value. If the safety trips a 3rd time within 90 minutes, the unit locks out and will not restart until the operator clears the fault using the keypad.
