YORK YKLow Frequency Fault

On the display

The panel shows Low Frequency Fault. The manual lists no other wording for this message — this is the only variant.

What it means

This fault is declared when the VSD speed remains below the minimum speed longer than the allowed VSD Low Frequency Fault Time. The panel watches how long the VSD runs below its minimum speed, and the fault appears as soon as that time exceeds the limit the panel allows. Which limit applies depends on the Power Fault Recovery Control feature: with it enabled, the panel uses the adjustable VSD Low Frequency Fault Time; with it not enabled, that setting has no effect and the fixed standard time of 25 seconds applies instead.

Why it appears

  • VSD speed below the minimum speed for longer than the VSD Low Frequency Fault Time — this is the only cause the manual gives for the message.

What to check

  1. Open the Power Fault Recovery screen and press Button 8 to display the VSD Low Frequency Fault Time. The value is visible in view mode, but only editable in Admin access level and above.
  2. Check whether Power Fault Recovery Control is enabled. When it is not enabled, the setting has no effect and the fault is based on the standard time of 25 seconds instead of the adjusted value.

Setpoints and thresholds

  • VSD Low Frequency Fault Time — located on the Power Fault Recovery screen, Button 8.
  • Adjustable from 60 sec to 120 sec, with a default of 60 sec.
  • Visible in view mode, but only editable in Admin access level and above.
  • On the Power Fault Recovery screen the setting is listed together with its mode, low limit, high limit and default.
  • The setpoint has also been added to the Setpoints report and the History log in the MVVSD section.
  • When Power Fault Recovery Control is not enabled, the setting has no effect and the standard time of 25 seconds applies.

Questions engineers ask

What does Low Frequency Fault mean on a YORK YK chiller?

It means the VSD speed has remained below the minimum speed for longer than the allowed VSD Low Frequency Fault Time. The panel raises the fault as soon as that time is exceeded.

What is the VSD Low Frequency Fault Time and where is it set?

It is the allowed time for the VSD speed to stay below the minimum speed. It is set on the Power Fault Recovery screen (Button 8), adjustable from 60 sec to 120 sec with a default of 60 sec, and it is only editable in Admin access level and above.

Why does the Low Frequency Fault use 25 seconds even though I set a longer time?

When Power Fault Recovery Control is not enabled, the VSD Low Frequency Fault Time setting has no effect and the fault uses the standard time of 25 seconds.
